Barry Crockett, former Master Distiller at Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard, was announced as the winner of the International Spirits Challenge (ISC) 2013 Outstanding Achievement award at a ceremonial dinner which took place in London this week (16th July 2013).
The award paid tribute to Barry Crockett’s significant contribution to the growth of the Irish Whiskey category, following an illustrious career spanning over 47 years, during which time Barry has witnessed the phenomenal worldwide success of Jameson and overseen the creation of the revered Single Pot Still Whiskeys of Midleton range.
Barry Crockett commented “I am deeply honoured to have received this Outstanding Achievement award. The success of Irish whiskey around the world in recent years has given me a great deal of pleasure and I am particularly proud to have been able to contribute to its development. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Midleton distillery and I would like to thank everyone at Irish Distillers who has supported me over the last 47 years.
Anna Malmhake, CEO and chairman of Irish Distillers, comments: “I can’t think of anyone more deserving than Barry Crockett to receive this award for Outstanding Achievement. Barry has played such an important part in Irish Distillers’ success and his contribution to the Irish whiskey category is unrivalled. Barry will be missed around the distillery by us all but with Brian Nation now taking over after years of mentoring from Barry, we are confident that our Irish Whiskeys will continue to achieve great acclaim from the industry in the years to come and will be a true legacy to Barry and his ancestors.
Irish Distillers had further reason to celebrate after scooping a total of nine gold awards in the ISC, with three expressions – Jameson Gold Reserve, Midleton Barry Crockett Legacy and Midleton Very Rare all awarded Best in Class status, highlighting the outstanding quality of the company’s Irish Whiskey range.
Irish Distillers’ success at the ISC follows an excellent gold medal haul for Jameson in this year’s Beverage Tasting Institute, with Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve rewarded with a Platinum medal, while Jameson Gold Reserve and Jameson Select Reserve both received gold medals.

About Irish DistillersIrish Distillers Group was formed in 1966, when a merger took place between Irish whiskey distillers, John Power & Son, John Jameson & Son and the Cork Distillery Company. In an attempt to reverse the decline in Irish whiskey sales, the board of directors decided to close the existing distilleries in Cork and Dublin, and to consolidate production at a new purpose-built facility.

A site alongside the existing distillery in Midleton, Co. Cork was chosen as the location for the new distillery, as there was no room for expansion in Dublin. Both the Old Jameson Distillery and the Old Midleton Distillery currently operate as visitor centres attracting over 330,000 visitors annually. Following an early unsolicited takeover offer and one of the most protracted battles in Irish corporate history made by GrandMet, Allied-Lyons and Guinness, Irish Distillers was taken over by Pernod Ricard in June 1988 with the support of the management and employees.

Irish whiskey brands within the Irish Distillers’ portfolio include Jameson, Paddy and Powers, with Single Pot Still brands, Green Spot, Yellow Spot, Redbreast and the much-revered Midleton, which includes prestigious expressions such Midleton Barry Crockett Legacy and Midleton Very Rare, completing the line-up.
About Pernod Ricard
Pernod Ricard is the world’s co-leader in wines and spirits with consolidated sales of € 8,215 million in 2011/12. Created in 1975 by the merger of Ricard and Pernod, the Group has undergone sustained development, based on both organic growth and acquisitions: Seagram (2001), Allied Domecq (2005) and Vin & Sprit (2008). Pernod Ricard holds one of the most prestigious brand portfolios in the sector: ABSOLUT Vodka, Ricard pastis, Ballantine’s, Chivas Regal, Royal Salute and The Glenlivet Scotch whiskies, Jameson Irish whiskey, Martell cognac, Havana Club rum, Beefeater gin, Kahlúa and Malibu liqueurs, Mumm and Perrier-Jouët champagnes, as well Jacob’s Creek, Brancott Estate (formerly Montana), Campo Viejo and Graffigna wines.
Pernod Ricard employs a workforce of nearly 18 800 people and operates through a decentralised organisation, with 6 “Brand Companies” and 75 “Market Companies” established in each key market. Pernod Ricard is strongly committed to a sustainable development policy and encourages responsible consumption. Pernod Ricard’s strategy and ambition are based on 3 key values that guide its expansion: entrepreneurial spirit, mutual trust and a strong sense of ethics.

Royal Salute, the world’s leading luxury Scotch whisky, picked up two double gold medals for its 21 Year Old and 38 Year Old Stone of Destiny expressions at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Both expressions were shortlisted for the Chairman’s Trophy in the blended Scotch whisky category at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge, which the 21 Year Old was eventually awarded along with an Ultimate Recommendation.

MORRISON BOWMORE DISTILLERS SCOOPS DISTILLER OF THE YEAR

MORRISON BOWMORE DISTILLERS SCOOPS DISTILLER OF THE YEAR
Distillery manager and brand ambassador hailed as industry icons in awards hat-trick
Morrison Bowmore Distillers has cemented its position as the single malt specialist by being voted Whisky Distiller of the year at the 2013 Icons of Whisky Awards Scotland.
Glasgow-based MBD, the producer of four single malt brands - Auchentoshan, Bowmore, Glen Garioch and McClelland’s - was applauded by the judges for transforming a bulk blend business into a single malt specialist and reinvigorating all its brands with some “stellar releases”.
The awards celebrate the people and places behind the greatest whiskies in the world and two long serving MBD employees also won individual awards.
Eddie MacAffer, Bowmore Distillery Manager won the inaugural Distillery Manager of the Year category for 46 years of committed service, and Iain McCallum landing  Brand Ambassador award, being hailed as “a new breed of ambassador who manages to mix a mastery of hard-core technical knowledge with a rare passion for the fun aspect of whisky.”
Mike Keiller, CEO, Morrison Bowmore Distillers said: “To see off such stiff competition and land a hat-trick of awards is a massive boost for us.  Compared to any of our peers, we’re a small company so it’s immensely flattering to see both our business growth and individual expertise recognised. Being a single malt specialist requires considerable care and patience, but we’re certainly reaping the rewards of our investment.”
The 2013 Icons of Whisky Scotland were announced at an awards ceremony at Edinburgh’s Prestonfield House on Friday 7th Sept 2012.  The judging process included regional heats in the U.S, Scotland and other international markets.

MAJOR TROPHY AND GOLDS FOR DIAGEO WHISKIES IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

MAJOR TROPHY AND GOLDS FOR DIAGEO WHISKIES IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

Outstanding successes for Diageo’s Scotch and Irish whiskies at the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC).

The Singleton™ of Glen Ord™ 15 year old scored a Trophy  -  the ultimate prize  -  and a Gold Outstanding citation, and other Diageo whiskies walked away with 12 Gold and Gold Outstanding Medals and 23 Silver and Silver Outstanding Medals at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) who announced their results on 26 July.

Highlights

The highlights for Diageo whiskies this year are:
  • A Gold Outstanding and overall Trophy for ‘Best Single Malt 15 years and Under’ for The Singleton™ of Glen Ord 15 year old, which the judges praised as “Wonderfully complex and appealing. Warm and sensual, compiled with a basket of forest fruits and savoury delights. Classic and Chic.
  • Gold Outstanding medals for Lagavulin™ Distillers Edition™ and Lagavulin 16 year old  -  confirming these majestic Single Malt Scotch Whiskies yet again as some of the top whisky medal winners of our generation.
  • Bushmills™ 21 year old Single Malt Irish Whiskey also won a Gold Outstanding award: the judges loved it:  “Stunning nose led by ripe nectarine, peach, and marzipan. Then follows a dramatic wave of malty aromas backed by rich oloroso sherry. Hints of cinnamon and sweet vanilla. Deep flavoured mellow mouth with lots of mature characters all based around fine malt and good sherry. Hints of raisins and liquorice. Smooth in all respects. Intense, well concentrated finish.”
Gold Medals (which means 90-100 out of 100 points) for several of great blended Scotch whiskies, including John Walker & Sons Odyssey® and Johnnie Walker® Blue Label™ and Black Label®; for Windsor™ 21 year old, a big player in South Korea; and for Buchanan’s™ 12 year old and Haig Supreme™ 1627, both highly significant brands in Latin America.
Gold Medals were also awarded to The Singleton™ of Glen Ord™ 12 year old and Caol Ila™ 12 year old, and to Bushmills™ 16 year old Single Malt Irish Whiskey.
Silver Outstanding Medals went to:
  • Johnnie Walker® Platinum Label™ 18 year old, released earlier this year
  • Oban™ 14 year old
  • Talisker™ 10 year old
  • The Singleton™ of Dufftown 15 year old
  • The Singleton™ of Glendullan 12 year old
  • Windsor™ 12 year old
  • Windsor™ Deluxe 17 year old

Comment by Nick Morgan

Dr Nick Morgan, Diageo’s Head of Whisky Outreach, said
“These 36 Gold and Silver Medals are a tribute to the skilled and dedicated men and women who make our whiskies. In a hugely crowded field, the Trophy for the Best Single Malt under 15 years old for The Singleton™ of Glen Ord 15 year old is a wonderful confirmation of the good taste of our discerning consumers in Asia where this innovative single malt whisky is outperforming the category.
“And it’s also fantastic to see some of our great vibrant blends like Johnnie Walker®, Buchanan’s™, Bushmills™ and Windsor™ pulling in so many Golds and Silvers in this important competition.
“It goes to show that commercial success goes hand in hand with a passion for making the very best whiskies, acknowledged here by impartial and highly qualified professional judges.”
