News from the Irish Pot Still Distillers

THE RETURN OF YELLOW SPOT

On the 23rd of May in London, Yellow Spot Single Pot Still whiskey made its return having not been seen in whiskey shops since the early 1960s. It was originally part of Mitchell & Son Wine Merchant’s ‘Spot’ range of whiskeys which included Blue, Green, Yellow and Red Spot. These names were derived from the Mitchell’s practice of marking their maturing casks of whiskey with a mark or daub of coloured paint to determine the age potential of the whiskey. Blue Spot was an 8 year old, Green a 10, Yellow a 12 and Red Spot a 15 year old. Rather than being simply a finished whiskey, Yellow Spot is special in that it contains single pot still whiskey that has been matured for a full 12 year period in three oak cask types: American bourbon barrels, Spanish sherry butts and uniquely, Spanish Malaga casks. The influence of the Malaga cask brings an exotic sweet note to the whiskey making it a truly delightful taste experience. Only 500 cases of Yellow Spot have been bottled making it a bottle to seek out and enjoy.

DISTILLERY EXPANSION UNDERWAY

Following receipt of final planning permission, construction work as part of the distillery expansion project has commenced at Midleton distillery. One of the most exciting features of the new distillery will be an impressive, glass fronted, Stillhouse which, when complete, will contain 6 brand new potsills. These new stills will be identical to those already in use at Midleton Distillery since the last upgrade in 1975.

FATHER'S DAY IDEAS

Father’s Day will fall on Sunday 17 June next and with it comes that annual question: What to buy your father? If you dad is a whiskey drinker, then it’s the perfect opportunity to buy him a bottle of something slightly special; the one that he admires and almost buys when visiting the off-licence, but doesn’t. Maybe now is the time to introduce or reacquaint him with Single Pot Still Irish whiskey? For some great ideas, visit the whiskeyshop atsinglepotstill.com. Mention father’s day on your order and we’ll gift wrap your bottle and include your message. Happy father’s day!

NEW LOOK FOR REDBREAST 12 CASK STRENGTH

Since its launch last year, Redbreast 12 Cask Strength has been enjoyed by hundreds of whiskey enthusiasts lucky enough to find a bottle. While we think the whiskey is really fantastic, there was some feedback suggesting the bottle label and box looked too similar to that of Redbreast 12. We’re happy to advise that the second batch of Cask Strength, which will be released in the coming weeks, will benefit from slightly different packaging designed to place more emphasis on the fact that it’s the Cask Strength edition. We hope you like it.
